The time has come. He is gone. What next for Cuba!?
Gotta love the NYTimes, linking to a transcript of his speech and a slideshow as well as news coverage (I expect by tomorrow my time there will be soooo much more…).
Meanwhile, let’s get away from the mainstream and find out what else is going on. I’m liking Babalu Blog, mainly because it’s the first place I’ve found a reference to Raul not just as a ‘pragmatist’, but as a dictator in his own right.
I’m no expert on Cuba (goodness knows there are plenty of those…), but what I do know is that when I was there some 15 years ago people seemed to have far more respect for Fidel than Raul, and be more frightened of Raul than Fidel.
My feeling is that Fidel resigning may open the way for further change, but that it will be slow and probably painful.
Surely Raul’s waited a long time for this glorious moment, and he ain’t going to give it up easily.
